Born and raised in San Diego, CA, Mike Feeney studied Fine Art Sculpture in the MFA program and has found a new passion in accessory design after collaborating with fashion design students earlier this year. He finds inspiration in everything from the engineering of bridges and buildings to books and science fiction. He works in Acrylic, bronze and nickel. Tap Plastics in El Cerrito, CA sponsored this collection.

Born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand, Warot was inspired by artist Man Ray.

Man Ray’s surrealist artworks intrigued me. His black and white photography inspired me in the monochromatic palettes and his use of geometric shapes influenced me to create the strong structural silhouettes. I incorporated his use of the human figure where it resembled another man-made object in the construction of my outfit because not only did it challenged the conventional views of the human body, but it also allowed me to share my point of view of how fashion design can make the body more than what it is.

Warot’s collection will be shown with Mike Feeney’s Acrylic accessories.

Kara Laricks was born and raised in Overland Park, Kansas.

My collection is inspired by a personal progression and evolution. Finding the perfect balance between masculinity and femininity and celebrating the contrast between the two, my collection chronicles my experience fitting into one world, but knowing I belong in another. On a lighter note, my garments evoke the late Sunday morning sexiness of enjoying coffee in your boyfriend’s – or girlfriend’s – big white dress shirt.

Eric and Katrina collaborated on a menswear collection based on a prisoner mending his clothing with patches in the hopes of escaping and avoiding detection on the street. Eric is from Jakarta, Indonesia and Singapore. Katrina is from California and the First Prize winner in the Home Elements Category of the 2008 Surtex International Student Design Competition.

Born and raised in Lahore, Ali Khan completed his MFA degree online while in Pakistan. He has created a clever mix of classic wearability in his shapes and color-scheme with avant-garde surface textures and details. His humor delivers through his slogan Caution: For External Use Only. Ali shipped his menswear collection to San Francisco for his thesis presentation, which was held by videoconference. Ali plans to expand his menswear label internationally beginning with South Asia.

Jaime Cole premiered her work during New York Fashion Week in February 2008 when she collaborated with textile designer Young Jun Ryu and was profiled in MTV: True Life I’m Going To Fashion Week.

Born and raised in Meriden, CT, Jaime presents her own menswear collection inspired by street art and music. Influences of primitive art of the Northwest Indians are shown through her textile designs and totem poles in her silhouette. Cone Denim sponsored the denim in her collection.

Anne Jones, Womenswear Designer, was born and raised in Yuma, AZ.

The inspiration for Ephemeral Defraction immerged from the installation artist Olafur Elliason’s exhibit Take Your Time. The play of light and geometry was strong in Elliason’s exhibit and was a major influence on the design details. Also, the idea of nature versus artificiality was an influence on the silhouette and the use of Mylar.

Michelle Clarke, Textile Designer, was born and raised in El Paso, TX.

Michelle printed with disperse dyes on Bristol and heat transferred the design onto Mylar plastic with multiple results of ink flowing through water to look liked stained glass. This fall, Michelle will be interning with Diane von Furstenberg and in January 2008 will begin working at Abercrombie & Fitch.

Born in Koesching, Germany and raised in Reichertshofen, Germany and Houston, TX, Johanna interned at L’Officina della Moda in Italy. She will present a sustainable collection of recycled fabrics

My initial inspiration was my dream destination Iguazu waterfalls in South America. I am combining the fluid lines of falling water with a traditional Latin cultural aesthetic. Many garments include abstracted designs and embroidery details, which were inspired by traditional folk embroideries from Latin America. I am using vintage-recycled garments, some of which I have hand dyed, as well as airy chiffon and lightweight silks.

Born in Manila, Philippines and raised in California, Daniel is inspired by the California way of life. American & Efird, Inc. donated the orange day glow yarn and Iron Horse Safety Specialties donated the reflective ribbons used in his collection.

Californians are people with lots of character, they are free spirited, carefree, and live their lives with a wherever the day takes them mentality. This mantra is carried into their travels, going to places like Guatemala and South Africa, which is where the jacquard patterns and silhouette shapes were derived for my collection.

Desiree Daniels was born and raised, in San Diego, CA.

The collection, originally inspired by the constructivist artist Naum Gabo, is a study of tension and suspension. Gabo creates sculptures using organic-shaped wooden frames with thin steel wires wrapped through and around them. The overall shapes within the frames are geometric and translucent. This inspiration evolved into a study of suspension bridges and the concept of tension and suspension.

Modern forms including sculpture, architecture and painting inspire me. I begin a design by thinking about the shapes and concepts behind an inspiration. Then I form a fabric manipulation and drape on the stand. I take photos, analyze them and sketch. I think about different visual details and use scale and placement on the body to differ them.

Born in Ulan-Ude, Russia (in Siberia on Lake Baikal) and raised in Ulan-Ude, Tashkent, Ulyanovsk and Moscow, Elena Akoulova completed her degree online while in Marietta, GA. She has created a womenswear collection of simple A-line linen dresses with draping techniques and colors inspired by orchids. Elena decided to present her thesis in person with her collection before the review committee in San Francisco and afterwards was told she had been selected to show during NY fashion week. She plans to go into production with her RTW line here in the U.S.

Born and raised in Fairfax, VA, Sherise is a first generation American of Palestinian decent. Jewelry designer Melissa Christensen, a Fine Art Sculpture major, created the jewelry for Sherise’s collection and has manipulated metal by hammering and hand bending to mimic the flow of fabric. Melissa is Native American from the Mashentucket Pequot Tribe in Mashentucket, CT and has spent the past 10 years in the Bay Area of California.

M.C. Escher’s artwork, nature, and geometric shapes inspired ‘Jun’ for his textile prints on wool, cotton and faux fur. Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Jun has accepted the position of associate creative designer at General Motors.

The refined classic and comfortable aesthetic of James Dean was the inspiration for the fashion designers who collaborated on this collection using Jun’s textiles. Designers include Jaime Cole, Desiree Daniels, Lauren Hume, Johanna Hatzenbuehler, Anne Jones, Muriel Jordan, Kara Laricks, Aurelie Martin-Chiari, and Warot Subsrisunjai.

Juhee found inspiration in the work of Louis I. Kahn, an architect of contradiction whose concepts, though modern and elegant, are constructed of basic and often crude materials. Through his influence, she created a sculptured, geometric silhouette and experimented with different construction techniques for her knitwear. She combined fabrics in different directions to make a single garment; used folding and slide techniques; mixed fully fashion, cut and sew, different gage, slippery and dull yarn and elastic and non-elastic yarn to create her unique construction and texture knit fabrics. Soo Jung found inspiration for her collection in the movie Blue Swallow (Cheong-yeon) about Park Kyung-won, the first female aviator in Korea. Based the early 1900s when Korean society was conservative and discriminative against women, the heroine had passion and an independent spirit for her job. Pilot uniforms and Asian influences are reinterpreted by Soo Jung who was born in Yeosu, Korea and raised in Seoul, Korea.

Ivanka used the pilot’s point of view overlooking the land from above for her textile inspiration. Instead of using the more traditional patchwork approach to represent the land, she combined textile techniques with hand drawing to create the feel of paintings. She bonded newsprint paper and brown paper to the base fabric, applied pigments using silkscreen techniques and drew patterns using a knife. For some, she used a chef's torch to create a burnout effect. The overall impression is that of an art piece instead of a typical printed textile. Ivanka was born and raised in Pernik, Bulgaria.

Shady was born in Khartoum, Sudan and raised in Cairo, Egypt. The song Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) by the Audio Bullys with vocals by Nancy Sinatra influenced the mood of his collection and embodies the mindset of the man wearing his clothes. The silhouette represents the weight of the world on his shoulders but standing strong and being a fighter. Further inspiration was found in Islamic military costume, architecture, the Japanese anime TV show Grendizer, and the work of Shady Abdel Salam, a famous Egyptian cinematographer, director and costume designer.

For the first Fall / Winter season, February 2008 saw the Academy of Art University on the calendar. Collections are now divided by season to be shown during the appropriate fashion week in New York City.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA and raised in Indiana, PA, Felice created a collection inspired by fiber artists, the arts and crafts movement, nature and the environment. Most evident of her inspiration are her felted-wool applications, which look like dreadlocks. She has blended organic wools and leathers resulting in a sculpturally modern silhouette with a Haight-Asbury feel. Scarves by Fashion and Knitwear Design student, Daniel Emir Armosilla, who will present his Spring ’08 collection in September.
